Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Best Big-Screen Pixel, Best Pixel Battery

★★★★☆ 4.0 / 5 1 runner-up finish

The Pixel 9 Pro line won Most Improved at MKBHD's 2024 Smartphone Awards — and the XL is the better of the two for most buyers. Same triple-camera system, same Tensor G4, same software, same 7-year update commitment as the 9 Pro, but with a 6.8-inch display and meaningfully better battery life. If you'd consider a Pixel and battery matters, this is the right Pixel.

Pros

  • Same camera system as Pixel 9 Pro
  • Best battery life on any Pixel — 7+ hours screen-on
  • Best on-device AI features in any phone
  • Seven years of major Android updates

Cons

  • Tensor G4 still trails Snapdragon 8 Elite and A19 Pro
  • $100 more than Pixel 9 Pro for the bigger size and battery
  • Heavier than 9 Pro — less pocketable
  • Camera trails Best Camera winners (Find X9 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro)

Why it's the better Pixel

Same hardware as the Pixel 9 Pro across cameras, chip, software, and update commitment. The only differences: 6.8-inch vs 6.3-inch display, and 5,060 mAh vs 4,700 mAh battery. The display alone is worth the upgrade for video and reading; the battery life difference (7+ vs 5.5–6.5 hours screen-on) is decisive for many buyers.

Display & build

6.8-inch Super Actua LTPO display, 1–120Hz, ~3,000 nits peak. Larger and roughly equivalent to the Pixel 9 Pro on color accuracy. Build quality matches the 9 Pro — premium aluminum frame with the matte camera bar.

Performance & AI

Tensor G4 + 16GB RAM. Same chip as the 9 Pro. AI features (Magic Editor, Pixel Studio, Gemini Nano) work identically. Where the 9 Pro XL pulls ahead is sustained workloads — the larger body has better thermal capacity.

Camera

Same triple-50MP system as the 9 Pro. Output is identical. The XL's larger body offers slightly better thermal headroom for long video shoots.

Battery

5,060 mAh battery, 37W wired, 23W wireless (Qi2 ratification). Real-world: 7+ hours of screen-on time consistently — meaningfully better than the regular 9 Pro. Best Pixel battery to date.

Verdict · 4.0 / 5

If you want a Pixel and battery matters at all, get the 9 Pro XL — the $100 upgrade over the regular 9 Pro is worth it. If you want the smallest current-gen Pixel Pro, the 9 Pro is the right pick. The XL is the more rounded recommendation for most buyers.
